In continuation of the roles the HolySpirit plays in the life of a Christian, we shall now refer to a number of relevant texts of Scripture.
The HolySpirit counsels, intercedes for, encourages, comforts and speaks in defence of the believer. The Bible says, “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.” The Greek word translated ‘Helper’ in the Scriptural text above is ‘parakletos’ and encompasses the activities of the HolySpirit listed in the first sentence of this paragraph. As our parakletos, the HolySpirit intercedes for us, just as the Bible says : “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” (Rom 8:26).
The HolySpirit guides the believer. The Bible says, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth…” (Jn 16:12-13). There were many things Jesus wanted to tell His disciples, but they could not receive those things in their current state. Therefore, He promised them that the HolySpirit, when He had come, would guide them into the knowledge of those things. The same thing applies to us today. Receiving guidance from the HolySpirit is a privilege which Jesus, by His finished work, has provided for Christians, on both personal and corporate basis. It is unnecessary and even dangerous for any Christian to attempt to run his or her life without the guidance of the HolySpirit. To disregard the Spirit’s guidance is to settle, at best, for a mediocre standard of living. Therefore, seek to be led by the HolySpirit consistently.
Arguably, every human being wants to know something of the future. It is, understandably, an instinct in man. This is the reason why those who promise  others a glimpse of the future, through various occult practices, gain much patronage from well-meaning, but deluded people who are ignorant of the fact that the Bible says that part of the ministry of the HolySpirit to those who submit themselves to the Lordship of Jesus is to reveal the future to them. Listen to Jesus as He says, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come,…. He will tell you things to come.” (Jn 16:13). Though the HolySpirit will not disclose the whole future to the believer (God never promised to do that), He loves to give the Christian glimpses of the future, here and there.
In the same vein, the HolySpirit reveals the things that God has graciously given us in Christ Jesus. 1Corinthians 2:12 says, “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.” God has done everything  necessary to make us all He wants us to be, but we need to know this by revelation and appropriate it by faith. It is only the HolySpirit that can reveal those things to us in such a way as to inspire faith in us to receive them from God. It is one thing to know something simply by information and another thing to know it by revelation from the HolySpirit. It is the later that produces real faith that leads to a miracle.
All Christians have been called to be witnesses to Jesus Christ. However, without Divine empowerment, it impossible to be an effective witness to Jesus. The Bible says, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”” (Acts 1:8). It is the HolySpirit who empowers the believer to be an effective witness to Jesus. No wonder, shortly before His ascension, Jesus in addressing His disciples said, “And you are witnesses of these things. Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”” Shalom.
