Light is symbolic of revelation. This is because it discloses what would otherwise remain hidden. God does not intend to hide anything we need from us. The Bible says, “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly.” (Ps 84:11). The Bible further refers to what the light of revelation discloses as, “the hidden wisdom” which God ordained before the ages for our glory (1Cor 2:7). It shows that God’s wisdom can only be known by revelation. No wonder Paul prayed for the Ephesian church saying, “the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,” (Eph 1:18). Until we receive light (are enlightened), we will not know the hope of His calling or the riches of His glorious inheritance in us.
Both our relationship with God and work for Him were designed to function on the basis of light (revelation). That is why the Bible says, “But the path of the just is like the shining sun, That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day.” (Prov 4:18). Hence, the walk of faith is not a walk in the dark, but in the light. The first recorded utterance God made was: “…”Let there be light”…” (Gen 1:3). Though the condition of the earth was ugly (without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep), God did not call anything else into existence until there was light. Remember, the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters, yet the earth did not experience any positive transformation, until God spoke light into being. The implication is that light is the basis of God’s work. We are able to walk with God by the light of revelation.
Ministry is service to humanity on God’s behalf. Therefore, every Christian has a ministry of some kind to mankind. This does not mean that every Christian is called to the five-fold ministry of Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher. These ministerial offices have been appointed by Jesus, “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,” (Eph 4:12). Every Christian should be involved in “the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.” However, ministry is first to God and then to man as an overflow of the riches of the quality time spent with God in fellowship. The Bible says, “… God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” (1 Jn 1:5). In ministry we reveal God to humanity. Isaiah puts it thus: “Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you. The Gentiles shall come to your light, And kings to the brightness of your rising.” (Isa 60:1-3). The book of Matthew expresses it as: ““You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden…..Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matt 5:14,16).
The world desperately awaits our shining and reflecting the light of the revelation of God’s glory on it. The people of this world are in deep darkness. The lives of many people today can be summarized in the words of Genesis as: formless, empty and dark. The good news, however, is that you and I are here as ambassadors of the kingdom of light. How, then, do we accomplish this ministry? We do so by fellowship with God—who is light Himself. The Bible says, “that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.” (1Jn 1:3). Through communion (fellowship) with God, our lives are infused with the light of God. This, in turn, enables us to radiate His glory among people, as we live and operate by the hidden wisdom of God. Shalom.
