“Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” (Eph 5:17).
It is always important to ascertain God’s will on significant matters before we take action. “Is this you Lord?” Should be our consistent attitude towards vital decisions in life. Not all that glitters is gold. Appearances can be deceptive, as God revealed to Samuel : “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1Sam 16:7). It is never right to assume that because God has called someone else to do something that we are supposed to do the same thing. God is committed to revealing His will to us.
Therefore, we should never accept Satan’s lies that it is a complex thing for us to know God’s will for us. It is important for us to note that it was Jesus who had asked God for another Comforter to represent Him and carry on His work in our lives. Hence, the Holy Spirit is here to stand in for Jesus; to honour and glorify Him by showing us the Father’s will for us in Christ Jesus. The Spirit reveals (on behalf of Jesus) what God’s will for us is, at any moment in life. Therefore, as Jesus would, if He were physically present with us, the Holy Spirit as our Comforter, counsels us, helps us, intercedes for us, Advocates our cause, strengthens, and stands by us. What an awesome privilege! Hallelujah.
Before God initiates or undertakes anything, He speaks about it. His word initiates His work. God does not attempt to bring anything into existence without speaking first. Genesis 1:2-3 says, “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.” Although the earth was chaotic and in dire need of transformation, and although the Spirit of God Himself was hovering over all that chaos, the status quo remained, until God spoke. In as much as we should never in any way minimise the role of the Holy Spirit in God’s programme on earth, we should always remember that God must speak, if His Spirit is to create or recreate. Your life may, at the moment, parallel the condition of the earth as recorded in the scriptural text above. You may also feel that you have been submerged in problems and wonder why in spite of your having been filled with the Holy Spirit, you do not yet know deliverance in your experience. What you need is a word from God. It is true that it is the Spirit of God who will effect your deliverance (Zec 4:6), nevertheless, the Spirit will act only on the basis of God’s word to you.
Such a word is the only valid basis of faith. It is the authentic foundation on which other things are built. Not to have that foundation is to lack a valid claim to God’s commitment to the cause or project : “The LORD said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled”” (Jer 1:12). Jeremiah had seen correctly, only because what he had seen was God’s word to him. Therefore, he had a solid ground upon which to expect God’s commitment to His own word. Accordingly, God affirmed His vigilance and total commitment to ensuring the fulfilment of His word. Therefore, seek that revelatory word, to the fulfilment of which, God is totally committed. Shalom.
