How giant killers think.
How giant killers speak.
How giant killers act.
There are giants (mostly metaphorical) in every man’s promised land. The devil ensures they are there to contest your claim to it. God never promised the absence of giants in the land He has given us. However, He has assured us of victory, if we demonstrate simple childlike faith in Him. His word to Israel was: “ ‘Rise, take your journey, and cross over the River Arnon. Look, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin to possess it, and engage him in battle.” (Deut 2:24). In principle, that command applies to us today. In other to possess our promises from God, we need to engage the giants consistently in three areas: our thoughts, speech and actions.
Giant killers think in a certain way. They take control of their minds. They pay attention to their own thoughts. This is because they take seriously what the Bible says, which is that, “…as he thinks in his heart, so is he…” (Prov 23:7). They know that the mind is the primary theatre of the warfare between good and evil. It is clear to them that, should they lose the battle in their minds, they have actually lost it. That was the undoing of the ten spies who said, “There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”” (Num 13:33). Their defeatist mental perception of themselves proved to be prophetic, as they failed to possess the promised land. Thoughts, especially predominant ones, are not mere fantasies but are the essence of reality. This is why it is important to make God’s thoughts ours by meditating on His word. It is difficult, if not impossible, to experience the reality of a prophetic destiny your mind counteracts by accommodating negative thoughts. Giant killers such as Joshua, Caleb and David had one thing in common: they occupied their thought processes with God’s word. Hence, His power enabled them to conquer their giants. If you desire to share in their testimony, follow in their footsteps.
The Bible say, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Prov 18:21). Giant killers are well aware of the potential power of the tongue to produce life or death; good or evil. Therefore, they conscientiously demonstrate their choice of life by how they use their tongues (1Pet 3:10). Giant killers go beyond thinking God’s words. They speak them. They do not let their circumstances dictate the nature of their speech. It is usually tempting, in the heat of difficulty, to say anything that comes to mind. However, giant killers are aware of Satan’s insidious tactic to stir up trouble and then turn around to suggest that they speak according to what they can see, hear or feel about their circumstances. Joshua and Caleb saw the giants in the land just as well as the other spies did. However, they ensured that what they had seen in the natural did not influence the report they brought to Moses and Israel. Their confession reflected their faith in God. The Bible says, “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”” (Matt 12:37). While the words Joshua and Caleb spoke on their return from spying Canaan justified them to go in and possess the promised land, the words their colleagues spoke condemned them, subsequently leading to their destruction. David, the giant killer, displayed similar understanding of the power of the spoken word, when he described Goliath as an uncircumcised Philistine. His exact words were: “…“What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”” (1Sam 17:26). The outcome of that confession of his faith is well documented in the Bible as one of David’s finest moments. The same thing can be said of you if you emulate him.
It has been said that some people make things happen, some watch things happen, while some others wonder what happened. Giant killers belong to the first category—those who make things happen (in a positive sense) Giant killers understand that faith without action is dead. Thought and speech should be accompanied by action to complete the cycle. Giant killers demonstrate their faith by their actions. Giant killers take steps of obedience to God, irrespective of contradictory voices and circumstances. The Bible says, “If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land;” (Isa 1:19). Your promised land has a lot of good in it for you. However for you to eat any of it, you have to act on God’s instructions. That was how Isaac killed the giant of famine that confronted him in the promised land. The Bible says, “There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar. Then the Lord appeared to him and said: “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you. Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.” (Gen 26:1-3). God’s instructions required Isaac’s actions of faith, which, thankfully, he took. The result is stated in the following words of the Bible, “Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him.” (Gen 26:12). You are a giant killer in Christ Jesus. Therefore, rise to your calling by thinking, speaking and acting like one. Shalom.
